RG has been active in a number of countries around the world.
In addition to pioneering the first geothermal developments in the United Arab Emirates in the Arabian Gulf, RG has for the last years prepared the development of one of the world’s largest geothermal resources in Southern Ethiopia. This massive resource is among the world’s largest geothermal sites. RG has acquired geothermal exploration licenses for promising concessions in Corbetti, Tulu Moye and Abaya regions where RG´s scientists have identified areas with temperatures up to 350°C. Reykjavik Geothermal and the Government of Ethiopia signed an agreement to develop as much as 1,000 megawatts in Ethiopia over the next 10 years.
Recently RG has completed series of geoscientific surveys in the Abaya area in Ethiopia, just north of Lake Abaya. The Abaya geothermal prospect is planned in Humbo Woreda, Wolayita Zone in the state of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR). Environmental & Social Impact Assessment has been completed and ESIA has been submitted and approved by the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity. The ESIA includes Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) and Resettlement Policy Framework (RPF).
Reykjavik Geothermal is presently also involved with partners and sponsors in another focus area in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean. There, geoscientists have completed confirming and modelling the geothermal resource, environmental and social management system has been implemented and exploration drilling is underway.
